  1. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups Part 2

  2. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups • Last time, we did a challenge that helped you identify skills that you need to work effectively in a group. • You came up with some good examples of what it takes to work together effectively in a group. Let’s focus on 3 particular skills that are important for group work: • Active listening • Respecting others’ ideas • Including everyone

  3. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups What do you do when you actively listening to someone? How do you feel when someone is actively listening to you? Active listening is one way of showing respect. What are other ways to respect other people and their ideas? In order for the whole group to work together, everyone needs to be included. What are some ways to make sure that happens?

  4. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups What is empathy? When you were creating your story out of pictures you were using empathy What do you look at to interpret empathy? Why is empathy important?

  5. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups • We are going back to our stories • You must be able to • Describe how the characters are feeling • Relate how the feelings fit with the story • Make sure you are using the 3 group skills we talked about earlier – what are they?

  6. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups • Challenge • In your group • You are going to try and hit a target 8 feet away using a sheet of paper • When you toss the object it has to go over the blocker • You will have 3 tosses as a team the closest team wins • The person tossing will not be able to see the target so your group (those who can see the target) will have to communicate with the person tossing

  7. Empathy and Communication: Working in Groups • Reflection • Empathy is: • Identify at least two skills that are important to group work • Name a situation in which you interact with others. Describe how active listening, respecting others’ ideas, and including everyone will be helpful in that situation
