  1. Preface to the Study of Proverbs By Kim Anderson

  2. The purpose of the book of Proverbs can be found in the opening verses • “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: to know wisdom and instruction, to discern the sayings of understanding, to receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity; to give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion, a wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles” (1:1-6). • These verses mention five things this study is designed to do and will help us do:

  3. To know wisdom and instruction • The book of Proverbs is about wisdom. It teaches us how to acquire wisdom and provides instructions showing us how to act with wisdom.

  4. To discern the sayings of understanding • As we study the book of Proverbs, we will see that it is written in such a way that we can comprehend it. Its simplicity allows us to more easily understand it and then apply what we learn.

  5. To receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and equity • In Proverbs we receive instruction showing us how to walk in wisdom, how to be righteous, and how to be just in our dealings with others and treat everyone fairly.

  6. To give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discretion • Those who lack wisdom are able to gain it from a study of Proverbs. It is designed for those who are young and inexperienced so that they may learn from one who already possesses the wisdom they might hope to attain.

  7. To grow as a child of God • Though the wise man said this book was directed especially toward “the youth,” (1:4), it is not exclusively for them. All men, from every stage of life, can learn and grow from studying the counsel contained in the book of Proverbs. We are told what will happen when one approaches the book properly. First, he will hear and be receptive to the words of wisdom. Second, after hearing, he will increase in learning. Finally, after learning what he is taught, he will acquire wisdom.

  8. As we begin a study of the book of Proverbs and strive to “understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles” (1:6), I encourage you to remember what the wise man said: “A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel” (1:5). • The book of Proverbs reveals the wisdom that comes from above. If you desire this wisdom, then you will eagerly read and study the words that have been recorded. The simplicity of the Proverbs makes it so that your eager reading and studying (hearing) will result in learning. The truths discussed in this book are not unattainable for the common man, only to be comprehended by the elite. These truths are for everyone. As you learn the words of wisdom and put them into practice, you will gain wisdom yourself – not worldly wisdom, but wisdom that comes from above. • So I invite you to follow along in this study. May we all grow in wisdom as we study the book of Proverbs.
