  1. The Tudor Dynasty In Brief

  2. Henry VII • Seized the crown on 22 August 1485 • Defeated Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth Field (He was the last king of England to win his throne on the battlefield) • He had two six children, four survived infancy: • Arthur (Died from English Sweating Sickness at 15) • Henry • Margaret • Mary

  3. Henry VIII • Became King in April, 1509 • Married his brother’s wife, Catherine of Aragon (said it was his father’s dying wish) • This was allowed because the marriage was never consummated. • She had many children, but all were either stillborn or died at birth…except one, Mary Tudor. • King Henry was determined to have an heir to the throne, a son.

  4. Henry VIII Continued… • He tried to divorce Catherine because of inability to have a son (and because he had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn). • The Catholic Church refused to grant this. • Henry breaks England from the Catholic Church AND declares himself the head of the Church of England. • Marries Anne Boleyn.

  5. Henry VIII • Anne Boleyn has a child: A girl, Elizabeth. • She was also unable to bear King Henry a son. • She was beheaded. Accused of having several affairs while married to the King (all of which she denies). • Henry then marries Jane Seymore. He loves her and she DOES bare him a son, Edward. • She dies in childbirth

  6. Henry VIII • Henry is devastated by Jane’s death, yet feels the need to marry again. • A political marriage is arranged with Anne of Cleves. Henry finds her ugly, and has the marriage annulled. Although, they end up becoming very good friends. • Henry then becomes infatuated with the young and beautiful Catherine Howard, who is also beheaded for having an affair. She bore him no children (by this time Henry is getting rather old).

  7. Henry VIII • Finally, King Henry VIII marries Katherine Parr. She remains his queen until he dies, but bares no children. • When King Henry dies, King Edward (who is 14 at the time) becomes King. He dies of tuberculosis and the throne passes to his oldest sister, Mary.

  8. Mary Tudor • Catherine of Aragon’s daughter. • Devoutly Catholic • She tries to restore England’s allegiance to the Catholic Church. • Becomes known as Bloody Mary because of all heretics (Protestants) she had burned at the stake. • She marries King Phillip of Spain, but has no children.

  9. Queen Elizabeth • Elizabeth is the daughter of Anne Boleyn. • She never marries and becomes known as the Virgin Queen. • She is a great ruler, and is still recognized as the greatest ruler that England ever had. • More about her a bit later…
