2012 and the EERE Web Enterprise This is a Time of Change • Transition into DOE platform • White House-mandated reduction in number of URLs These are not incompatible activities. However… We need to take a hard look at creating new sites
2012 and the EERE Web Enterprise As it is, new site requests are brought to the Project Review Team (PRT). We have not played a gatekeeper role in managing these requests; we do not reject requests. That said, we have a responsibility to reduce our total number of domains. So we can either have the PRT play gatekeeper (which we do not want to do) or we can have you, the coordinators, act to filter which requests are necessary new sites and which might be added on to existing sites. Here are a few ideas…
2012 and the EERE Web Enterprise • If you have not attended a Project Review Team meeting, we invite you to do so. Understanding the process is crucial; participating in a meeting is a good way to see how the PRT really operates. • If you have requests from your Program Manager or program colleagues for a new site, we need you to demonstrate why a new site is needed (rather than adding on to or changing an existing site) before we can bring it to the PRT. We are required to reduce our total URLs by 40%--and we absolutely cannot do that if we are being asked to support the creation of new sites. • If you need support from the C&O web team regarding this responsibility, we’ll be glad to provide it.
2012 and the EERE Web Enterprise • Suggestion: at each meeting, we would be glad to welcome staff from the programs so that they can see how the web team functions. This could be a good opportunity to demystify what we do and why our policies are what they are. This could be a rotating invite to individual offices or a periodic open-house, whichever works best. (It’s just an idea.) • It is possible we will send invitations to conference calls or webinars apart from our monthly meetings, so that we can inform you of developments in a timely way.
Communication Standards Tip Website Template EERE maintains its unified online identity by requiring most of its websites to be designed in the EERE Web template. All websites in the eere.energy.gov domain should be in this standard template. Partnership sites with unique URLs may sometimes have their own look and feel. http://www.eere.energy.gov/communicationstandards/template.html
Wrap Up • Next meeting: February 16
