  1. Homework • I-4 due tomorrow (there is no I-3) • Quiz on Islam Monday

  2. Fourth Pillar: Fasting during the month of Ramadan • How is this similar to fasting rituals in other religions? What is the purpose of these kinds of rituals? • Have you ever experienced a fast before? Why did you choose to go through this, and how did you feel after it was over? • Is fasting still a worthwhile ritual in the 21st century? Is there anything people can still learn by doing it?

  3. Fifth Pillar: Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca). • Think of a trip that you have taken in your life or would like to take that you would consider to be a pilgrimage. This trip could be connected to your religion, or it could be to a location that you personally consider to be sacred (for example, the Lincoln Memorial, the Grand Canyon). Why did you choose this particular pilgrimage, and how would this experience be similar and different to the hajj?

  4. Critical Thinking Question • Based on our discussion of the Five Pillars and the other core beliefs of Islam, what do you see as some of the key similarities between Islam and Judaism and Christianity? What are some of the differences?

  5. Similarities “People of the Book:” Each have a holy book with similar teachings. Believe in heaven, hell, and a final day of judgment. Differences Muslims view Jesus as a prophet, but not the son of God. Qur’an perfects the teachings of the Torah and the Bible. Islam vs. Judaism/Christianity

  6. Aim: How did the Muslims succeed in building an empire? March 6, 2014

  7. I. Muhammad Dies • Muhammad dies in 632 A.D., two years after returning to Mecca • Abu Bakr (Muh’s father-in-law) becomes the caliph, or the successor to Muh as political leader of the Muslims.

  8. II. The Age of Conquests • Abu Bakr succeeds in holding Muslims together. • Between 632-750 A.D., Abu Bakr and the following caliphs conquer big chunks of Byzantine Empire, Persian Empire, Northern Africa and Spain (center at Cordoba).

  9. III. Why was Islamic Expansion so Successful? • Reasons for Success: • Belief in jihad: Described in the Qur’an as “struggle in the way of God.” • Ongoing conflict between the Byzantines and the Persians made them weak and vulnerable to attack. • Large, dedicated army made up of Bedouins. • Treatment of conquered peoples. • Allow Jews and Christians to serve as officials, scholars and bureaucrats because they were “people of the book.”
