  5. Canada’s Eco-zones

  6. The Arctic: • Cordillera, Northern and Southern • Climate: cold (-35c to +6c), little precipitation (200-600mm) • Landforms: mountains to flat lands scraped by glaciers • Soils: cryosols, granite parent rock (sandy/dry soils) • Vegetation: some small trees, shrubs lichen and mosses. • Animals: muskox, caribou, polar bears, arctic wolf, hare, fox (more varieties as you move south), wider range of migratory birds and songbirds. No reptiles or amphibians • Humans: Very few <15,000 subsistence activities

  7. Ellesmere Island

  8. Mokka Fjord, Axel Heiberd Island

  9. The Taiga: • Cordillera, Plains, Shield • Climate: cold (-22c to +8c), little precipitation (250-300mm) • Landforms: steep mountains and narrow valleys, • Soils: cryosols, granite parent rock (sandy/dry soils) • Vegetation: some small trees, shrubs lichen and mosses. • Animals: muskox, caribou, polar bears, arctic wolf, hare, fox (more varieties as you move south), wider range of migratory birds and songbirds. No reptiles or amphibians
