  2. The Nile River… • A source of religion for Ancient Egyptians • Used stories about the gods to explain events in nature • Believed the sun was a god that was born each day and died each night • Became a symbol for cycle of life

  3. Many Gods… • Thoth- god of wisdom • Hathor- god of love • Osiris- god of dead • Hapi- god of Nile • Re- sun god • Anubis- god of mummification • http://www.nemo.nu/ibisportal/0egyptintro/1egypt/index.htm

  4. Believed… • Believed flooding of the Nile was controlled by the gods • Believed in life after death- afterlife • Book of the Dead- collection of prayers take into afterlife; placed in coffin

Afterlife… • Pyramids- a burial place for the dead; larger pyramids were for rulers; smaller ones for wives or non-royalty • Later bodies were buried in Valley of Kings; bodies were placed in cave like tombs • Believed they needed items from life to take into afterlife such as toys, clothes, furniture, games, jewelry, servants, etc.

Mummification… • Anubis- god of the afterlife • Believed in afterlife, so needed to preserve the body • Remove brain with a hook through nose! • Remove all organs except the heart- home of the soul • Place certain organs in canopicjars • The four canopic jars were put into a special chest which went into the tomb with the mummy.

  7. Canopic Jars Each canopic jar guarded a different organ. 1. Imsety had a human head, protected the liver. 2. Qebehsenuf had the head of a falcon and guarded the intestines. 3. Hapi had a baboon head protected the lungs. 4. Duamatef had the head of a jackal, and guarded the stomach.

  8. Long Process… • 70 day process • Body covered in natron- a special type of salt (40-50 days) Salt draws out the fluids • Body is stuffed with herbs and spices. • Then salt is removed and oils are rubbed on skin along with herbs and incense • Body is refilled with sawdust or linen. • Then body is wrapped in strips of linen- a type of material made from flax • Body is covered in resin- a sticky, wax like substance

  9. Decoration… • Amulets - are placed on linen, for protection in afterlife • Face is painted and a wig is added • Mask is placed over head and shoulders • Body is then placed in sarcophogus- a stone coffin.
