  20. Difference between secondary school & University • Bigger Class: • Classes at the University are quite different from that of your secondary schools. • in a group of more than 100 people (for lectures) and sometimes in a group as small as 10 people (for seminars or tutorials). • Some courses may involve laboratory work, practical experience and field work too. Therefore, get ready for the diverse learning experience to come!

  21. Difference between secondary school & University • More Time Flexibility: • In secondary school: • you had a “set timetable” and • contact with teachers was close and frequent (meeting them 5 days every week) • Coming to University: • you create your own time table! • discover that classes meet less often than before, only 1-3 hours a week. • need to study at least 2-3 hours out of class for each lecture hour. • A lot of assigned reading and writing tasks will also be required to fit in your schedule.

  22. Difference between secondary school & University • High Academic Expectation: • In secondary school : • You could always earn good grades after learning the contents of your textbooks by heart! However, • In University: • More challenging. You will be expected to read a lot, write a lot and deal with a lot of questions that sometimes do not have answers. • Think outside the box and formulate your own study plan and make use of the University Libraries

  24. Difference between secondary school & University • More independent Thinking: • In secondary school • your teachers always check your completed homework and guided you through different thinking processes. • In University • you develop your own independent thinking and ask questions in class. • you always need to read analytically and judge critically on the reliability of different sources.

  25. Difference between secondary school & University • More Freedom and Choices • Coming to University: • Wide range of subjects you can study and the activities you can participate in. • With a more flexible timetable, you will have a lot of freedom to manage your time between activities and outside of classrooms and halls. • Exploring new interests but don’t lose track of studies! • Time management and the ability to prioritize are the two most essential survival skills you need

  26. Difference between secondary school & University • MoreSelf Discipline • In secondary school : • You were assigned daily homework • Your teachers collected and checked them on regular basis to make sure that they were properly done. • In University: • your instructors assume that you can always be trusted to complete your assignments without being reminded. • Your professors and instructors may or may not recommend textbooks. You have to relate what you have learnt in class to your readings. • you have to bear in mind when your assignments are due!

  27. Difference between secondary school & University • MoreDecision-making • In secondary school: • your teachers and parents might have played an important role in making decisions for you. • Of course, you can always seek their advice after entering University. • In University: • You must learn how to make your own decisions now. • You have to take responsibility of your own actions. • Do consider the ethical and moral aspects of the situations you are engaging in. • Don’t be shy to seek advice when you need it.

  28. Thank you
