10.10 Warm-Up. A group of friends was looking up at a rain cloud. Each had a different idea about how rain falls from the clouds. This is what they said: Ja’Quil : I think rain falls when clouds are melt. Quavious : I think rain falls when the clouds open up.

  1. 10.10 Warm-Up A group of friends was looking up at a rain cloud. Each had a different idea about how rain falls from the clouds. This is what they said: • Ja’Quil: I think rain falls when clouds are melt. • Quavious: I think rain falls when the clouds open up. • Nayona: I think rain falls when the clouds get too cold. • Raquita: I think rain falls when clouds are shaken or pushed together. • Danya: I think rain falls when water drops in the clouds get too heavy. • Evelyn: I think rain falls when the evaporated water in the clouds condenses. • Key’Shawn: I think the rain falls as the ice crystals in the clouds begin to melt. • Jesus: I think the rain falls when the water falls through little holes in the clouds. Who do you agree with and why? Write your claim and evidence.

TODAY’S OBJECTIVE • I can explain that solar energy (sun) is the driving force of the water cycle. • I can describe and label all stages of the water cycle (Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration, runoff, infiltration) • I can describe phase changes of H20 that may occur in each stage of the water cycle.

  6. THE WATER CYCLE 1 • The main source of water=oceans. Every day, trillions of liters of water evaporate from the ocean

  7. THE WATER CYCLE 2 • Water also evaporates rivers, lakes, and other sources on land. Plants give off water vapor as well (transpiration)

  8. Evaporation • Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes into water vapor (gas) through heating

  9. Transpiration Transpiration is the release of water vapor into the air (evaporating) from a plant’s leaves

  11. Condensation Condensation is the change of state from water vapor to liquid, through cooling.

  12. Clouds Clouds occur when water vapor condenses into tiny water droplets in the atmosphere

  14. THE WATER CYCLE 4 • Water from clouds fall back to earth’s surface as precipitation.

  15. Precipitation Precipitation is any type of water that reaches the Earth (rain, snow, sleet, hail)

  17. THE WATER CYCLE 5 When water reaches the ground, three things happen to it: • Runoff • Groundwater/Infiltration • Evaporation

  18. Run-off/Accumulation 1. Water runs down hills over surface (runoff) and collects in oceans, rivers, lakes, streams (accumulation)

  19. Infiltration Water is soaked into the soil or ground (groundwater).

  25. Station #2: GA Virtual Learning (Pg. 6) • Go to the bottom of page 6 under “Hydrology/Meteorology” • Match the vocabulary word with the description. • Copy down the table (key word/definition) in your notebook.

  28. 10.12 Warm-Up Six friends were looking at large, white, puffy clouds in the sky. They wondered what the clouds were made of. This is what they said. Who do you agree with and why? Write your claim and evidence.
