  1. Simple Christianity Brett Andrews Church Planter New Life Christian Church

  2. Where’s the Power? • For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believesRomans 1:16 • …I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.Matthew 16:18

  3. Where’s the Confidence • Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant 2 Corinthians 3:4-6

  4. Where are the Peter, James, & John’s? • Be not overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?Ecclesiastes 7:16

  5. Preach the Bible with Confidence • I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.Romans 1:16

  6. Preach the Bible with Confidence • When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.2 Corinthians 2:1ff

  7. Why have planters lost confidence in preaching?

  8. “Experts” say that preaching is ineffective

  9. “Experts” say that preaching is ineffective • Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. 1 Corinthians 1:20-25

  10. Extreme Application of being “seeker-sensitive” • Paul’s philosophy of preaching:When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.…My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.1 Corinthians 2

  11. Loss of Confidence in the gift of preaching • According to Barna research, only 8% of ministers identify “leadership” as a primary gift.

  12. Loss of Confidence in the gift of preaching • Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.1 Corinthians 14:1

  13. Loss of Confidence in the gift of preaching • In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction2 Timothy 4:1

  14. To Lead, Apply the Bible with Confidence

  15. Where is our confidence? • Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.Joshua 1:7

  16. Where is our confidence? • For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.1 Corinthians 1 • Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.1 Timothy 4:16 • Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.1 Corinthians 1

  17. Where is our confidence? • Unless the Lordbuilds the house,    the builders labor in vain.Unless the Lordwatches over the city,    the guards stand watch in vain.In vain you rise early    and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—    for he grants sleep to those he loves.Psalm 127:1-2
