  3. Freedom Riders • Bus terminals in much of the South remained segregated and the Freedom Riders traveled through the South to bring attention to this. • What happened to the Freedom Riders at many of their stops?

  5. Violence in Birmingham • Dr. King knew that the government would only act if the movement was attacked and violence got out of hand. • He launched protests in Birmingham hoping to get President Kennedy active on Civil Rights.

  6. Kennedy and Civil Rights • Kennedy pushed for Civil Rights laws after violence in Birmingham, but they would be difficult to pass.

  7. March on Washington • Dr. King organized a March on Washington to build support for the Civil Rights Act. • Dr. King delivered a powerful speech outlining his dream of freedom and equality for all Americans.

  8. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Made segregation illegal in most public places and created Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to stop job discrimination.

  9. Voting Rights Act • The law suspended discriminatory practices which prevented AA from voting or registering to vote.
