  1. Reasons Against Gun Control • Right to own a gun is guaranteed in second amendment • Guns don’t kill people, people kill people • Guns can be used for defense • Prohibition of anything by the government does not work

  2. More Reasons • Guns will always be sold illegally no matter how much it is regulated • Gun control actually does not reduce crime • Gun control promotes crime by disarming victims • Gun prohibition increases profits and incentives to produce weapons illegally

  3. Statistics Against Gun Control • In Connecticut more than 85 percent of gun crimes are committed by people who cannot legally purchase guns. (Based on a review of 290 incidents of gun crime where the origin of the gun was identified) • In Connecticut a person needs a permit and background check to buy a berretta handgun but not need any of those in the private sale of a target rifle (CT General Statutes, 29-33)

  5. History • Founded in 1871 by two Union soldier Veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate • Oldest continuing civil rights organization in the US • Main Purpose was to promote rifle shooting on a scientific basis • Considered one of the largest lobbying organizations in the US

  6. Beliefs • NRA believes in the right to bear arms as granted by the second amendment • They believe a person has the civil liberty to own a weapon just as they have the right to free speech

  7. Republican Stance • The Republican Party defends the right to gun ownership as granted in the second amendment • NRA over history has generally been affiliated with the Republican Party

  8. Democratic Stance • Republicans are in favor of more gun control • They passed the Brady law and the Assault Weapons Ban • Increased prosecution on gun crimes greatly

  9. Libertarian Stance • Libertarians are opposed to any type of Gun Control • They believe gun control is just one more step in controlling the people
