  2. The Southern Region • Relies on riverboats and barges to transport cotton not on roads or railroads • Steamboats can travel on very, very swallow waterways • Mississippi River is heart of the South • South has 10,000 miles of railway

  3. The Southern Region • People are ranked in Southern society • Wealthy live on plantations and own slaves • Small farmers do not own slaves but hope too one day • Slaves work cotton fields

  4. The Southern Region • Southern economy is tied to producing cash crops, it is based on agriculture • There are smaller farms that produce foodstuffs • Slave labor is used on plantations • South produces cotton for Northern textile mills and Britain

  5. The Southern Region • Short mild winters and long hot summers • Flat wide rivers and numerous waterways • Rich soil helps produce cash crops like cotton, corn, rice and sugar cane production

  6. The Northern Region • Canals, roads, steamboats and railroads connect nation • 20,000 miles of railroad track will also connect nation to east ports • Clipper ships will transport goods overseas • Clipper ships are specially designed ships that travel fast and reach China for items like tea!
