  2. Civilization vs. Savagery • When Ralph keeps asserting there isn’t a beast, the narrator says, “Something he had not known was there rose in him…” (37). • “We want to have fun. And we want to be rescued.” Ralph establishes their mission statement (37). • As soon as Ralph exclaims, “We must make a fire…the conch [was] forgotten” (37). • Piggy caresses the shell, holds it, prevents the others from breaking it (37-38).

  3. The fire • “…the fire thrust out a savage arm of heat” (41). • Page 44 the fire is described with the following verbs: stirred, crawled, touched, scrambled, eating, laid hold, gnaw, crept, flapped…yikes! • “Piggy glanced nervously into hell and cradled the conch” (44). • “…and the fire growled at them” (45). • “Their faces were lit redly from beneath” (46).

  4. Loss of identity • “The boys lay, panting like dogs” (41). • “After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything” (42). • “I’ll split up the choir—my hunters, that is—into groups…” (42-43). • “The twin [Sam ‘n Eric (39)] giggled together” (45). • “The little ‘uns” (46). • “…them little ‘uns running round like insects?” (46).

  5. The Mark of the beast • “That little ‘un that had the mark on his face—where is—he now?” (46). • Bible Prophecy foretells that the mark of the beast will come upon “all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave” and that whoever receives the mark of the beast will be doomed forever. • Revelation 14:9-11 says their destiny will be “fire,” “brimstone” and “the wrath of God.”
