  2. Correcting Sentence Fragments Grade Seven

  3. What is a Sentence? A sentence is a group of words that contains three elements: -a verb -a subject -a complete thought If any of these elements is missing, it is not a sentence. It is a sentence fragment!

  4. Correcting Sentence Fragments To fix a sentence fragment, first find out what is missing. For example, if the group of words is missing a verb, then add one! Fragment: The girls on the team (No verb is present in this group of words.) Sentence: The girls on the team cheered!

  5. Correcting Sentence Fragments To fix a sentence fragment, first find out what is missing. For example, if the group of words is missing a subject, then add one! Fragment: cheered on the foul shooter. (There is a verb “cheered”, but no one is doing this action.) Sentence: The girls on the team cheered on the foul shooter.

  6. Correcting Sentence Fragments To fix a sentence fragment, first find out what is missing. For example, if the group of words is not a complete thought, add words so that it will make sense. Fragment: When the girls arrived (What happens when the girls arrive? This thought is not complete.) Sentence: When the girls arrived, the game began.

  7. Practice – Correcting Fragments • after the game ended There is a verb – “ended.” There is a subject – “game.” However, it is not a complete thought. Add words to make it a sentence. Ex. After the game ended, I went home. Ex. I went to Pizza Hut after the game ended.

  8. Practice – Correcting Fragments • the girl walking down the street There is no verb. “Walking” is an action but is not complete here. It is missing something. There is a subject – “girl.” This is not a complete thought. It is missing something. Add the verb that is missing so that it makes sense. Ex. The girl is walking down the street. Ex. The girl walking down the street waved at me.

  9. Practice – Correcting Fragments • turned on the television There is a verb – “turned.” There is no subject. No one is doing this action. This is not a complete thought. Who is doing this action? Add a subject so that it makes sense. Ex. I turned on the television. Ex. My brother turned on the television.

  10. This completes the review of correcting sentence fragments. • Additional review can be done in the review folders housed in 106 and the library.
