  1. Final Meeting INESCOP PROJECT PROGRESS AND DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES LIFE 10 ENV/IT/364 Pisa (Alicante) ICCOM-CNR 11th December 2013 Mercedes Roig Joaquín Ferrer INESCOP 1

  2. INESCOP Project Progress_1 2

  3. INESCOP Project Progress_2 3

  4. Action 2. Environmental impact of fatliquoring agents Objective: To assess the environmental impact of different commercial fatliquoring agents Results: There are no relevant differences in the appearance of the leathers The polluting load of all baths was quite similar All physical properties tested are above recommended thresholds for their use in shoe uppers, leather goods, upholstery and garments None of the families assessed stand out for their lower environmental impact on wastewater or for their better quality in all the parameters – we will employ average values as a reference values 4

  5. Action 4-6. Environmental impact of natural products Objective: To assess the environmental impact of natural fatliquoring products comparing with commercial products (Action 2) Results: Leathers have an acceptable appearance, full and firm, with a soft and pleasant feel with no significant differences between of the natural fatliquoring tested Natural fatliquoring products were less than the As, Cd and Pb limits Comparing between synthetic and natural products with the same treatment, there was an improvement by: 30% in the biodegradability on chlorinated products (FAME vs CLP) 42% on sulpho-chlorinated products (FAME_S vs CLP_S ) The physical and chemical parameters of the leathers are according to the limits required for footwear manufacture 5

  6. Fogging Test_1 • Fogging refers to the condensation of evaporated, volatile components of the interior automobile trim materials on the glass plates. • The aim of this test is to increase driving safety, since certain fatliquorings and plasticisers released from leather can evaporate and condense on the windshield (due to the difference in temperature between the inside and the outside of the car) thus forming an opaque condensate that causes poor visibility. • Fogging test has been carried out according to the European standard test method for the determination of fogging characteristics for automotive leathers UNE-EN ISO 17071:2011.

  7. Fogging Test_2

  8. Leather biodegradability test_1 • Test procedure developed by INESCOP • Tests carried out on a prototype designed and built by INESCOP • Based on a standard test of plastic materials biodegradability • Comparative evaluation of biodegradability of different leather samples regarding to the impact of the leather waste Prototype developed by INESCOP for evaluation of biodegradability of leather samples (IR quantification)

  9. FAME_S 13,4 % FAME_S 13,4 % CLP_S: 11,2 % CLP_S: 11,2 % FAME: 10,5 % FAME: 10,5 % CLP: 7,7 % CLP: 7,7 % FAME_S 13,4 % CLP_S: 11,2 % FAME: 10,5 % CLP: 7,7 % Leather biodegradability test_2
