Cold War Vocabulary • Satellite- a country ruled by another nation • Containment-was to contain, or limit, Soviet expansion • Truman Doctrine-It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” Iron Curtain- a barrier of secrecy and censorship that keeps a country isolated from the rest of the world

Cold War Vocabulary • Marshal Plan-economic recovery plan to keep European countries after WW2 democratic. • Arms Race- competition between nations who would have more powerful weapons than the other. • Domino Theory- the belief that if one country falls to communism all the country around it will begin to fall.

  6. Communism • Communism-a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.

  7. Economics of Communism • Based on two main factors • Central planning • Government decided how much of a commodity would be produced. Equal Distribution In case of shortages, items distributed on a first come, first-serve basis. These are not distributed evenly, such as housing was determined by party loyalty

  9. Ring of Safetyfor Soviet Union Stalin wanted a ring of countries on the western side of the Soviet Union to protect them from another invasion from the West like what Germany did.

  10. Power Struggle Begins • Russia decides occupy the Eastern European countries and make them Satellites of Russia. • Churchill coins the phrase “Iron Curtain” in reference to Russia setting up communist governments in these European countries.

America’s Response to Russia • Truman Doctrine: “It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” • How would we support free peoples? • America would offer financial aid for European recovery!

  12. Marshall Plan • Designed to rebuild the prosperity and stability of war-torn Europe • 13 Billion in aid • Us believed that communist aggression was successful in countries where there were economic problems

Arms Race Continues • 1952—US and Soviet Union both create Hydrogen bombs. • Mid 1950s both nations had Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) • 1957 Sputnik (Russians) Create the first space satellite that orbited the earth. Big Fear did one side or the other have more weapons that could take over the other country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
