  3. Which of the following is a true statement? A. All Arabs are Muslims B. All Muslims are Arabs C. Iran is an Arab country D. None of the above

  4. What is Islam • Islam is a second largest religion in the world • Islam originated in Mecca, which is today Arabia Saudi, in 610 A.D • Islam calls for the same truth that God revealed to all His prophets throughout history • Islam is just like any other divine religion that comes from the same source

  5. What is Islam • Some people mistakenly believe that Islam is just a religion for Arabs • Muslims come from many various races, ethnic groups and nationalities 20% Arab & 80% non-Arab

  6. Vocabulary • Muslims: the follower of Islam • Muslims are monotheisticand worship the same one God as Christians and Jews. • The word Muslim means “one who submits to the will of God.” • ‘Allah’ is the Arabic word for ‘God.’ • MOSQUE: a Muslim place of worship

  7. The Holy Quran • Muslims believe the Quran is the direct word of Allah revealed to Muhammad • Written and read in Arabic

  8. There are "Five Pillars" of Islam, which must be applied by Muslims

  9. Five Pillars • The Declaration of Faith • Prayer- Muslims perform five obligatory prayers a day • Zakat- or Alms and charitable giving(Giving money to the poor is REQUIRED, not optional) • Fasting- Muslims fast from first light until sunset one lunar month (Ramadan) a year • Pilgrimage- or Hajj to Mecca (an obligation for those who are physically and financially able once in a lifetime)

  10. Hajj • Muslims make a spiritual journey called a pilgrimage (or hajj) to visit the Kaaba in Mecca • According to the Quran, the Kaaba (black cube) was made by Abraham

  11. Sources of Islamic Doctrine • Quran (from root meaning read or study) • Hadith (tradition): is a body of literature developed roughly 200 years after Prophet Muhammad's death (632 A.D.) that accordingly reports his actions and sayings. • Sharia (way): Codified Islamic Law

  12. Islam today • There are fifty five Muslim countries spread around the world: in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa as well as a considerable number of Muslims who live in Europe and United States

  13. The World of Islam

  14. Myth • Muslims believe it is o.k. to kill civilians in a holy war (“jihad”). Reality • Only Muslim extremists believe this. (Just like most Christians do NOT believe in bombing abortion clinics.)

  15. What is jihad • Islam is not addicted to war, and jihad is not one of its "pillars”. • Jihad in Arabic language does not mean "holy war”. It means "struggle” or “strive”. • It is the difficult effort needed to put God's will into practice at every level.

  16. What is jihad • According to the recent interview with AbdallaElhafiz , a director of Islamic Association of Erie(IAE) Erie, Pennsylvania, Jihad means to struggle and strive against evil,(thought or actions), and It is a defensive war (a war against the illegitimate desires and evil)

  17. What is jihad • God does not allow harm of civilian, and requests the protection of women, children and the elderly during war (Q. 4:96; 9: 91; 48: 16,17) • “If any one slew a person--unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land--it would be as if he slew the whole people; and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” (Q. 5:32) • “You shall feed and protect prisoners of war, and you shall not expect a reward” (Q. 4: 25,36; 5:24) • Thus, the only permissible war in the Quran is one of self-defense, Muslims cannot kill unarmed (civilian), and they have to protect prisoners of war.

  18. Islam and other faith • Like the Torah, the Quran permits retaliation eye for eye, tooth for tooth. • But, like the Gospels, it says “it is meritorious to forgo revenge in a spirit of charity (Q. 5: 45) • Acknowledges Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Zachariah, Jesus, John the Baptist, and others as the “the good prophets of God” • A special place for Jesus and Mary (e.g., Q. 3:45,46; 4:156-158; 19:1-98) • Accepts that Mary’s conception is from God’s soul.

  19. Islam and other faith • Islam did not impose itself by the sword. • "There must be no coercion in matters of faith" (Q. 2: 256) • Muslims have to respect Jews and Christians, the "People of the Book”, who worship the same God • "And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better,” (Q. 2:62). • The right of all faiths to warship was respected • Sites of warship, holy places and shrines of all faiths were protected

  20. Islam and other faith What we have in common: • Many common principles of morality • God’s creation of the world • Final judgment—heaven or hell—based on our deeds • Islam faith is traceable back to Adam • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtVjs4XUSjc&feature=related

  21. Other Values • Right and Status of Women • Eliminated many pre-Islamic discriminatory practices • Gave women rights (e.g., inheritance) and equality to men, both were made from a single soul (e.g., Q. 4:1) • Treat women with kindness and respect their rights as equal to men • The forbidden or ‘taboo’ (muharramat) include pork, blood, improperly, baby animals, gambling, and charging interest • Alcohol drinking was gradually disallowed • Modest dress apply to women and men equally (Quran and Hadith). • Women are required to cover their bodies so that their figure is not revealed. • The hijabor head scarf
