  1. Stream of Consciousness and Cause and Effect English 11

  2. Stream of Consciousness • The continuous flow of thoughts, feelings, and memories • Sometimes known as an interior monologue • Shows an individual’s point of view by giving a written example of the character’s thought processes • Punctuation is often neglected • Informal language • Long, interconnected sentences

  3. Example from Literature • Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse”: • "Raising her eyebrows at the discrepancy -- that was what she was thinking, this was what she was doing -- ladling out soup -- she felt, more and more strongly, outside that eddy; or as if a shade had fallen, and, robbed of colour, she saw things truly.” • Focuses on the inner world of the protagonist • One singular sentence with many stylistic changes

  4. Your Turn! • Choose a topic. (Broad topics are easier!) • Write for five minutes straight. Your hand should not leave the paper until the time is up. • Don’t pause or read/change anything you have written. • If you can’t think of anything to write, continue writing that thought… my mind is blank and nothing is coming to me… • Please be appropriate, thanks!
