  1. Cause and Effect

  2. What is a cause? • A cause is something that makes or causes an event to happen.

  3. Key words to identify the cause: • Because: Because I didn’t study, I failed my test. • As a result: As a result of her actions, Stacie lost her job. • Due to:The game was canceled, due to the weather. • Since: I had to drink water, since I spilled my milk. • If: If you don’t do your homework, you will get detention. • So: So she wouldn’t be late, Sara left early.

  4. What is an effect? • An effect is the outcome of an event (cause). It happens because of something else.

  5. Key words to signal the effect: • Then: If you study, then you will pass. • Therefore: It is snowing. Therefore, school is closed. • So: It was raining, so I took my umbrella with me. • Note: The word “so” is tricky. It can be used for both the cause and the effect.

  6. Why is cause and effect important? • Thinking about cause and effect can help you understand your reading better.

  7. Practice Underline the cause and put a box around the effect. • Juan’s alarm clock didn’t go off, and he missed the bus. • Because I hit my leg on the table, I now have a huge bruise. • I slipped because there was water on the floor.

  8. Read the paragraph below and think about WHAT is happening (effect) and WHY it is happening (cause). • Kim woke up early Monday morning because she had so many things to do.  Before going to school she decided to make a list.   If I don't make a list I might forget everything Kim thought.  Since walking the dog is not Kim's job she put that first on her list.  She would have to take Spot for a short walk so she wouldn't be late for school. Next on the list was to pack a lunch because her class was going on a field trip to the zoo and  they wouldn't be able to eat in the cafeteria today.  The last thing on Kim's list was to take her umbrella.   Then if it rained she would stay dry and still be able to see all the animals at the zoo.  This was going to be a great day!

  9. Cause vs. EffectWhich is a cause, and which is an effect? Write “C” beside the causes and “E” beside the effects. Refer back to the passage to be sure your answers are correct. 1.
