Hernando de Soto: The First European Explorer of Florida and Conquistador of the Americas

Hernando de Soto, born in 1496 in Jerez de los Caballeros, became famous as the first European to explore Florida, which he named. Appointed governor of Florida and Cuba by King Charles, he aimed for riches and glory through his expeditions. Notably, he was the first European to see the Mississippi River in 1541. Despite his accomplishments, de Soto's life ended tragically in 1542 in Arkansas, where he succumbed to illness. To conceal his death from the natives, his aide buried him in the river.
