  1. SCADM Chief Officer’s Report SCADM 2014 meeting, Auckaland, New Zealand – 22-24 August, 2014

  2. 1. To promote long-term preservation and accessibility of data relating to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in sustainable repositories, 2. To assist in establishing Antarctic data management policies, priorities and best practices, 3. To support the establishment and ongoing work of National Antarctic Data Centres, in accordance with ATCM XXII Resolution 4.1 (1998), 4. To encourage submission of metadata and data to the Antarctic Data Management System, 5. To further improve and populate the AMD and provide guidance to the AMD host, 6. To provide linkages to other relevant data management systems and thereby enhance the ADMS, 7. In partnership with SCAGI to work with SCAR SSGs and SRPs, COMNAP and the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat to identify and develop fundamental datasets of value to the Antarctic Community. SCADM Terms of Reference:

  3. The Antarctic Data Management System consists of a network of National Antarctic Data Centres and the Antarctic Master Directory (AMD), coordinated by SCADM The Antarctic Master Directory (AMD) is the world’s largest repository of Antarctic data set descriptions. It is hosted by NASA’s GCMD.

  4. Project 1: Interoperable Data Repository Network 1.1 SCADM DIF/ISO Compliant Metadata Profile 1.2 AMD Catalogue Service Interface 1.3 Demonstration PortalsProject 2: Improving The Relevance And Utility Of SCAR Products 2.1 SCAR Product Review 2.2 SCAR Product Marketing Project 3: Polar Information Commons 3.1 Badging SCAR Data As Belonging To The PIC 3.2 PIC Repository Network 3.3 PIC Cloud

  5. Define the global reach of the Antarctic atmosphere and Southern Ocean. Understand how, where and why ice sheets lose mass. Reveal Antarctica's history. Learn how Antarctic life evolved and survived. Observe space and the Universe. Recognize and mitigate human influences. http://www.nature.com/news/polar-research-six-priorities-for-antarctic-science-1.15658 Relevant meetings:SCAR Horizon SCAN, April 20 to 23, 2014

  6. review the science roadmap what are the data management aspects and challenges what data managers can do to support the science that will be implemented as a result of the Scan ACTIONS Horizon SCAN

  7. - Data publication and data citation - Linking between journals and data sets- Unique persistent identifierseg. DOIs (datasets), ARKs (files), IGSNs (samples) - ISO standards: 19115 (metadata), -2 (spatial extensions), 19157 (data quality) - OGC standards (esp. WPS, SOS 2.0, KML, ..) - "Big Data”/sensor networks (observatories, autonomous vehicles, etc.) - Semantic Web/"Linked Data" (RDF+URIs) - Cloud computing/"everything-as-a-service” - Archiving models and software along with data - FOSS eg. release of ESRI GeoPortal - Data brokering (mediation w/o alteration) Compare SCAR Horizon Scan with Data Horizon scanning

  8. - Astronomy and Astrophysics from Antarctica (AAA)- State of the Antarctic Ecosystem (AntEco)- Antarctic Thresholds - Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation (AnT-ERA)- Antarctic Climate Change in the 21st Century (AntClim21)- Past Antarctic Ice Sheet Dynamics (PAIS)- Solid Earth Responses and influences on Cryospheric Evolution (SERCE) Kick off various Science Research Programmes

  9. Liase with SRP’s ACTIONS SRPS
