  2. D-Day: The Normandy Invasion

  3. Liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands Allies took weeks before advancing further inland into France  needed to push German army through Belgium. Took the Allies 11 months to liberate Europe  Germany surrendered May 7, 1945.

  4. Netherlands: “Hunger Winter” Fall of 1944, the Allies launched Operation “Market-Garden”. Goal: to bring the war to an end by cutting in half the German positions in western Europe. German resistance was fierce and offensive failed. Netherlands “Hunger Winter” of 1944-45 was a terrible time for the Dutch people  food exhausted and out of fuel.

Liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands Battle of Scheldt: October-November 1944 • German army occupied the Scheldt River  Canadians given the task of clearing the troops. • Was over and crucial supply line, essential to fuel the allied advance to liberate Europe. • Channel was secured and cleared of mines on November 28, 1944.

  6. Liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands Netherlands: February 8- April 28, 1945. • Canadians fought along the Maas River in Netherlands. • Goal: drive German forces down the Rhine and liberate Netherlands.

  7. War in the Pacific After fall of Germany  Allies focus energy on war in the Pacific. United States continuously bombed Japan but they would not surrender. August 6, 1945 US dropped atomic bomb over Hiroshima and the second on the city of Nagasaki. August 14, 1945 Japan surrendered.
