  19. Why propaganda? • 1917 American population just over 100,000,000 • 32 million American’s were foreign born or children of foreign parents, of which 10,000,000 had ties with Central Powers. • Wilson felt that loyal citizens were essential for a successful war effort.

  20. Steps Taken • The Committee on Public Information sponsored parades, rallies, films, hired speakers, distributed over 100,000,000 pamphlets in various languages. • The purpose was to create a sense of unity, patriotism

  21. WWI Posters • The poster was one of the more popular mediums that the government used for propaganda purposes. Posters were used to: • recruit members for the armed forces • The United War Work Campaign • The Red Cross • Encourage citizens at home to purchase Liberty and Victory Loans/Bonds
