  16. Imperialism • When a powerful nation takes political, economic, and cultural control over another nation. • For example, Africa was carved up by European countries so to gain raw materials for industrialization.

  17. By the late 1890's, the desire of big business for foreign markets and sources of raw materials encouraged territorial expansion overseas. I GOLD

  18. Colony • An area in which a foreign nation gained control over a region by settlement or conquest. • For example, Great Britain controlled and settled the Thirteen American Colonies.

  19. The US defeated Spain during the Spanish American War and acquired colonies abroad, fulfilling industry's craving for new sources of raw materials and the creation of a global empire.
