History • Culture Hearth • Indus Valley civilization • Harappa civilization • Aryans • Indo-European nomadic group that came through the Hindu Kush mountains. • Brought over their language (Sanskrit), social structure (caste system), and faith (Hinduism) • Empires • There were several kingdoms/ empires that came through India. • For example: Mauyran (Asoka), Kushan Kingdom, and the Guptas • The Moguls would be the last significant Muslim control in India • The Taj Mahal was built during the Mogul rule by Emperor Shah Jahan • British Control • Would be the last imperial rule in India. • Lasted until 1947 • Independence was achieved through a non-violent resistance led by Gandhi. • Gandhi died January 1948 • When India gained independence there was religious conflict between the Hindus and Muslims. This created a split to the country. Muslims migrated North creating Pakistan and East Pakistan (now called Bangladesh). • India’s population today is roughly 80% Hindu

Read the pages regarding that sub-region. Pull out 10 important things you feel the class needs to know about the sub-region. Be ready to discuss! • Pakistan • Bangladesh • Sri Lanka • Maldives • Nepal • Bhutan • Keep your Sprites sheet and discuss your article and information you found about your country!

  8. Amazing Race: Focus India • Each hour will be divided up into teams. • Wed/Thurs will be the race! • You will visit seven stations. Each station has a different theme of questions and challenges. As a team you will need to answer and complete the questions/challenges. • Themes: Religion, History, Culture/Entertainment, Current Issues, Surrounding Countries, Population, and Physical Geography. • If you answer all the questions correctly you will earn 3pts • If you answer all but one question correct you will earn 2pts • If you answer some questions right but miss two or more then you will only earn 1pt. • If you miss all questions you will earn zero pts. • When done you will be given a clue to the next destination of questions. • The team that finishes first will earn 5 extra pts., 2nd team 3pts, and 3rd team 1pt. to add to their total. • The team that earns the most points in the end wins! Each winning team will earn a treat and extra credit points.
