HORTICULTURE • Abranch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of plant cultivation. • “The cultivation of a garden, orchard, or nursery" and "the cultivation of flowers, fruits, vegetables, or ornamental plants" as well as "the science and art of cultivating such plants" • Horticulture is a science of studying garden plants. • The world Horticulture is derived from two Latin words viz. Hortus means garden and Culture means knowledge of growing these crops. Horticulture is an aesthetic science that deals with the important crops which are grown in the gardens e.g. vegetable crops in vegetable garden, fruit crops in fruit orchards.

  5. Importance and scope of Horticulture • 1. As compared to field crops Horticultural crops give more returns per unit area (More yield in terms of weight and money). • 2. Their nutritional status is high. • 3. Beautifies the surroundings. • 4. Suitable for small and marginal farmers. • 5. The varieties of crops are available in the Horticulture section with wide range of uses. • 6. Improve environment by reducing pollution, conserves soil and water and improve socio-economic status of the farmer.

Indoor Gardening • Growing of plants in suitable containers to beautifully the areas inside the houses is popularly called Indoor gardening. • Indoor gardens have become popular due to the mushrooming growth of residential flats in the cities . • The pleasure and thrill of indoor gardening are immense for everyone particularly those who lack open space for gardening. T • They add charm to the archetectoral beauty of the house and complement the interior selfing. • Indoor gardens may be established in open spaces available in terraces or shade of a tree in front of a house or verandah or inside the rooms. • The area chosen for indoor gardening should receive enough natural light and ventilation. Indoor gardens bring a natural greening and beauty inside the houses and adjoining areas.
