  1. Welcome

  2. What is Engineering World Health at UCSD about? • Providing real world, project-based experience focused on medical technology • Partnering with EWH national to help individuals and hospitals in developing countries • Educating engineering students on the growing efforts by UCSD Faculty in both Medicine in Engineering to improve Global Health We are committed to:

  3. Meet The Officers • Co-Presidents: • Thomas Chew and PJ Loury

  4. Meet The Officers • VP Internal: DiptiKanthilal • VP External: AkshayMaheshwari • VP Finance: Mike Adsit

  5. Meet The Advisors • Faculty co-advisor: Dr. Melissa Micou • Faculty co-advisor: Dr. Juan Lasheras • Get to know us!

  6. First Project: HIV Treatment Analysis • Entry for the EWH Design Competition • Provide Hospitals in the Developing world with a method to gauge patient response to HIV treatment • This information helps doctors determine the best way to suppress HIV in early stages • Design a device that can reproduce this method at a low cost

  7. HIV Treatment Project Team • Work alongside UCSD healthcare professionals to streamline a novel biological assay • Prototype an inexpensive thermocycler needed to run PCR for the assay • Learn how to design a temperature control system • Gain experience in engineering product development and documentation • Year-long project commitment • Open to All Majors

  8. Build Days • Hands on soldering and project experience • Assemble kits from EWH National • Kits used in low resource settings to diagnose malfunctioning equipment

  9. Upcoming Events • Global Health Speaker Series • Dr. Smith – HIV treatment analysis • Dr. Tilghman – Global health in Mozambique • other UCSD faculty focused on improving medical care overseas • Build Days • Two or three per year • Team-based activity • Thermocycler Project Team Meetings • Join our Programming Committee to plan Hospital Technology tours, Field Trips, and more!

  10. Duke Summer Program • EWH Summer Institute • Tanzania and Central America • One month training, one month work experience in developing hospitals • Learn the language, take technical classes, get lab experience, work in local hospitals • http://ewh.org/index.php/programs/institutes • http://vimeo.com/17098687

  11. Officer Positions Open • Programming Chair: Organize and lead Build Days and communicate with EWH National to purchase kits. Put on quarterly events.  Collaborate with other engineering/science clubs and put on joint social events. Work with Vice President External to secure hospital tours and/or funding for EWH @ UCSD • TESC Representative: Attend TESC meetings to act as a liaison for EWH and to communicate all EWH events to the engineering leadership • Publicity Chair:  Create/maintain a website for EWH at UCSD and update events in a timely fashion.  Also maintain the EWH Facebook Page. Make fliers to be posted around school to publicize GBM's and Build Days • Historian: Attend all EWH events and take pictures to be posted on the website. • Check the website ewh.ucsd.edu for full description of positions and application.
