  1. Chapter 7 Notes #1

  2. The road to the Cell Theory

  3. Scientists who paved the way • Zacharias Jansen • First compound microscope

  4. 1665- Hooke published his work on CELLS • Robert Hooke- used a compound light microscope to study CORK. Termed the structures he saw “CELLS”.

  5. Actually only saw cell walls of cells • “cellula”- Latin for small compartment

  6. Anton van Leeuwenhoek • 1600’s • Observed bacteria and protozoa as well as plant and animal cells

  7. 1833 • Robert Brown • Discovered the nucleus of the cell of orchids

  8. Building the Cell Theory • 1838 • Matthias Schleiden- observed plant cell structures • Theodor Schwann- observed animal cell structures

  9. Schleiden and Schwann cont….. • Published a book stating the cell theory in 1839 • Published cell theory #1 and #2, but had #3 incorrect. (3 parts covered in next slide) • Published spontaneous was means for reproduction of cells

  10. Spontaneous Generation • Cells form by free-cell formation, similar to the formation of crystals • Basically, cells arise from non living items.

  11. Virchow • Cell theory corrected by Rudolph Virchow • “Omnis cellula e cellula” • All cells only arise from pre-existing cells • NO spontaneousgeneration!

  12. Original Proposed Cell Theory 1839 • 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells • 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms • 3. cells form by free cell formation, similar to the formation of crystals

  13. Virchow revised cell theory • 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells • 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms • 3. all cells come from preexisting cells

  14. The Modern Cell Theory- 6 Parts Expanded information • 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells • 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms • 3. All cells come from preexisting cells • 4. cells contain heredity information which is passed from cell to cell during cell division • 5. all cells are basically the same in chemical composition • 6. all energy flow (metabolism and biochemistry) of life occurs within cells

  15. Cell Theory Song • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuJqqiATlqw
