Paragraph 1.18. The Dutch Revolt. Revolt. People in The Low Countries started a revolt against Alva. So William of Orange had to react, and help with the revolt. But their army was too small, so revolt was crushed by Alva.

  1. Paragraph 1.18 The Dutch Revolt

  2. Revolt • People in The Low Countries started a revolt against Alva. • So William of Orange had to react, and help with the revolt. • But their army was too small, so revolt was crushed by Alva. • Councils of Troubles arrested many people and trialed them as traitors

  3. William of Orange • Needed a bigger army • But nobody wanted to help, they were scared of Spain. • Elizabeth I of England, sent money, but no open support.

  4. Sea Beggars • (Geuzen) • They helped William of Orange. • They captured Brill on 1st April 1572. • They captured more towns in Zeeland and Holland. • Wiliam had money to pay for an army of German mercenaries. • He invaded the Low Countries and took over parts of it.

  5. William • He needed the Catholic support. • So he said: I’m not against Philip, but I’m against the Spanish violence and army. • In the mean time: Alva used a lot of violence! • Philip replaced Alva, but it was too late. The Spanish soldiers besieged rebel towns. • Leiden: broke its dykes and flooded the land around the town. • Sea Beggars came to rescue it.

  6. Breaking away from Spain. • 1575: Dutch and Spanish people talk about peace. • Spain didn’t want to be tolerant for Protestants. • So Holland and Zeeland made William of Orange their ruler. • They refused to listen to Spain.

  7. Spain • Had trouble paying their army. • Spanish troops wanted money! • They attacked and looted cities like Antwerp. • More people were now against Spain.

  8. January 1579: the low countries were split up: • Southern Catholic provinces: • Union of Arras • Wanted peace with Spain. • Northern provinces. • Union of Utrecht • Keeping Philip as king • But throw out Spanish troops, and get own old government.

  9. June 1580 • William of Orange: outlaw. • A reward was given to the one that would kill him. • Union of Utrecht was looking for a leader. • They asked French Duke of Anjou to rule them. (William would be his regent) • He agreed, but died 2 years later.

  10. Disaster • 10th July 1584 • William of Orange was assassinated. • Now there was no ruler and no regent!!
