Both on-board (GPS navigation) and off-board (truck-to-home) communications and control systems are being effectively utilized by commercial logistics operations. • The effective use of mobile IT capabilities (i.e., wireless, internet, satellite, etc.) will be an important component of a successful Sense and Respond Logistics initiative. • The hardware and software are advancing faster than the understanding of the human interface / usability aspects of the systems • Project Phases • Document the “best practices” of commercial freight transport organizations. • Analyze the tasks currently being performed using on-board and off-board systems. • Analyze the Department of Defense logistics operations to determine the applicability of the “best practices.” • Determine the changes in skill requirements and training necessary for Air Force personnel. • Project Objectives • Address the Human Factors implications of mobile IT in supply chain systems. • Evaluate how advances in mobile information technology can be incorporated in in-vehicle and off-vehicle systems to improve both efficiency and security. • Determine the information required by the various members of the teams that will be making coordinated decisions using real time, sensor and communications technology (manufacturer, carrier, truck driver, customer, end-user, etc).
