  6. Civics is… • a study of… • what YOU value • what YOU think is important in the world • how systems work in order for YOU to take part and bring about changes important to YOU

  7. THE MESSAGE…….. • Words and actions impact us all. Powerful words and purposeful actions can influence many. • Our own involvement determines the growth and success of ourselves and the society around us. • The recent parting words from one of our political leaders says it best……

  10. NOTE-TAKING: WHAT IS CIVICS? • - the study of DEMOCRATIC decision-making • - the study of GOVERNMENT and how it works • - the study of what it means to be an • INFORMED • ACTIVE • RESPONSIBLE citizen in the LOCAL, NATIONAL & GLOBAL context

  11. WHY STUDY CIVICS? • 1. Democratic societies need citizens with skills!! • - those who can see SEVERAL POINTS of view • - those who know HOW to get INVOLVED • - those who care about COMMUNITY and their role in it

  14. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: VALUES • 1. Define VALUES: our principles or standard for behaviour; one’s judgement about what is important in life. (oxford dictionary) ie. Honesty, achievement, selflessness, courage, integrity, fairness, empathy.. • 2.Create a chart to categorize the various communities to which you belong & the : • Home other(s)? • School • Oakville • Canada 3. For each community, list at 3 words to describe YOUR VISION of what is IMPORTANT about each.
