  12. Activity 75: Interpreting Motion Graphs • Date: 2/18/14 • Challenge Question: How can you use a graph to describe motion? • Getting Started: When you measured the speed of a cart rolling down a track, do you think the carts were going the same speed the whole time?

  13. Getting Started • The cart started at 0 m/s and then sped up to its top speed. Then it eventually slowed down and ended up at 0 m/s again. • You found the average speed over a distance of 100 cm.

(Distance vs. Time )Motion Graph • These graphs describe and interpret motion as linear (constant & straight) • Features in the motion graph: -a straight line indicates constant speed -a horizontal line indicates no motion, or 0 speed. -a + sloped line (upward) indicates motion away from start point - a – sloped line (downward) indicates motion toward start point
