  3. Purpose of Lesson • Students will be able to apply their prior knowledge about conduction of thermal energy and how to carry out scientific investigations to a new situation.

  4. Activity 61: Mixing Hot and Cool Water • Date: 5/12/14 • Challenge Question: • Getting Started: Give an example of conduction. • Give an example of each heat and temperature.

  5. Conduction This can occur with any two materials whether they are solid, liquid, gas, or any combination.

  6. Objective • Students will be able to measure the change of thermal energy when hot and cold water is mixed.

  8. Introduction pg. D-43 • Challenge Question: What happens to the energy when hot and cool water are mixed? • We will be conducting an experiment where you will mix liquids of different temperatures, similar to the scenario.

  13. Procedure • Step #4 • Wait for me to call each group up to get hot water. • Complete step #5- record starting temp of both waters- (hot and cold) • Complete step #6- Add cool water to the hot water, stir with a spoon until the temp. remains steady. • Record final temp in your data table

  14. Complete Step #8 • Empty cups and repeat Steps #4- 7 with Experiment 2 volumes • Then complete Experiment #3 volumes • Remember record your data in your data table.

  15. Calculate Temperature Change Subtract final temperature from Initialtemperature.
