  5. Guided Reading Framework • Small group with teacher/ guided reading • When not with teacher in a reading group, students work independently to practice skills in centers (vocabulary, spelling, grammar ). • Independent center work is assigned on Mondays and students should complete during the week. Unfinished independent center work should be completed at home to be turned in by due date in order to receive full credit. • Completed centers are averaged and worth a classwork grade.

  6. Reading Comprehension Skills • Story Elements • Predictions • Sequencing • Main Idea & Supporting Details • Cause & Effect • Compare & Contrast • Inference • Drawing Conclusions & Generalizations • Fact & Opinion • Summarizing • Point of View • Figurative Language

  7. Vocabulary Development The focus is for students to learn and use strategies to define words within text not just to memorize a definition. The program Word Wisdom incorporates both definition and places a heavy emphasis on usage. There is a bi-weekly vocabulary assessment on the 10 words in each part of the unit. Students will have the opportunity to work with the 10 words for 2 weeks then assessed. Students must use the Word Wisdom dictionary which is specific to the program to complete center work and prepare for assessments. In addition, students must be able to identify the part of speech for each word. (Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb) **Current research suggests morphological awareness can double or triple students vocabularies, increase reading speed, and make better sense of complex words in context. The following skills are incorporated in the Word Wisdom units of study. • Making meaning using context clues • Identifying parts of speech • Morphological awareness – using roots, suffixes, and prefixes to make meaning • Vocabulary and concept development • Identifying text features • Using antonyms, synonyms, homophones, homographs  Decoding and word recognition  Dictionary and thesaurus usage  Index and glossary usage
