  2. PDHPE Learning Area • One of 8 learning areas in NSW secondary curriculum • Learning area comprises 4 courses in Stage 6: • PDHPE 2 Unit • Community and Family Studies 2 Unit • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation CEC • Exploring Early Childhood CEC (CEC: Content Endorsed Course)

  3. PDHPE Stage 6 In 2009 PDHPE attracted approximately 20% of the HSC cohort and was the 4th most popular elective (behind Maths, Biology, Business Studies).

  6. Factors Affecting Performance • Energy systems • Training methods • Sports psychology • Nutrition and performance • Movement skill acquisition

  7. Critical Inquiry • Students encouraged to: • Question current understanding • Examine issues from a range of perspectives • Evaluate opinions over time • Challenge sources and explore motives • Explore social justice considerations

Key Resources • Government publications are most reliable in the health area: • Reports and publications from Australian Institute of Health and Welfare eg Australia’s Health 2008 • Reports and publications from NSW Health eg Future Directions for Health in NSW – Towards 2025 • Non-government agency publications and websites eg Cancer Council, National Heart Foundation. • Textbooks, newspapers, websites etc

  9. Where might students need assistance ? • Projects based around preventable chronic diseases eg cancer, cvd, diabetes • Health promotion initiatives eg national alcohol campaign • Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
