  • The Microsystem is the interconnections between an individual and their immediate surroundings. The Microsystem has the most profound impact on the individual as it constant throughout their life.
  • Examples of this system include: Family, Pre-school, neighbours and peers.

  • Family: Charlie being an only child has enabled him to develop closer relationships with his parents. This impacts positively for Charlie as it supports his social and emotional development.
  • Neighbours: Rhys and Suzie, play a crucial role in Charlie’s life as are able to stabilise his family life as they care for him two days a week. Thus many interactions are made and relationships develop. Rhys and Suzie's children Tom, Lil and Daniel being the same age as Charlie help to nurture his social development.
  • Pre-school: Mr Ball supports his cognitive development as well as his physical develop though sporting activities. This is a positive impact as it allows Charlie to explore new ideas as well as being exposed to a range of different intellectual concepts.
  • Peers: His best friend Ricky has helped develop Charlies personal interest in soccer which could lead to a possible future career or hobby.

  • The Mesosystem is the interpersonal relationships between the individuals that occupy in the microsystem and how those relationships may impact on the individual.
  • Examples of this system include: family and Pre-school, family and the neighbour, etc.

  • Family and Pre-school: Charlie’s family have had many concerns with the teacher about the teaching practices. This has lead to negative attitudes as Mr Ball treats Charlie unfairly. This has a negative impact towards possible future goals as well as his cognitive development.
  • Family and Neighbours: beneficial to Charlie as he is nurtured by other responsible adults that are able to offset the negative impacts of the family owned business as Charlies parents and the neighbours have been close friends for 7 years.

  • The Exosystem contains factors that are not directly impacting on the central individual, however impact on those around them.
  • Examples of this system include: Parents and the workplace, extended family, health services., etc.

  • Family and the workplace: Jacob and Marie own their own cleaning business which services many shopping centre’s including the local Centro mall which must be cleaned during late hours on Thursday and Fridays which has forced the family to find alternative care in the form of the neighbours. This has lead to the positive influences of Rhys and Suzie on Charlie’s development.
  • Extended Family: Although they all live in England they have recently visited and have made regular phone and email contact with Charlie. This has created a further opportunity for Charlie to develop his social skills as well as being introduced to a globalised society.
  • Health services: Have enabled a start to a successful physical development of Charlie as him and his family have access to immunisations as well as proper nutritional standards that will have a profound impact of the physical development as well as creating a positive self-image of themselves.

  • The Macrosystem are ideas and values which are not attainable or manipulated in most instances which can impact greatly the development of an individual.
  • Examples of this system include: Laws, economical climate, media, religion as well as social and cultural ideals.

  • Laws: Child protection laws. It is a positive impact on Charlie as he is ensured safe surroundings both at home and in the pre-school.
  • Economical climate: His parents being self employed does not allow the family much protection from the small business failure such as redundancy packages. This is exemplified through Jacob and Marie’s worry over the financial stability of the Centro group which is their main income.
  • Media: Negative portrayal of sporting teams due to one or two members committing offenses that are not seen as socially acceptable have created a negative image of Charlies sporting passion.
  • Religion: Family follows Catholism and attend church regularly. This has allowed Charlie to be present at Sunday school classes which reinforces currently social views which will support the emotional development of Charlie and his progression of social skills.
