  2. Politics Of New Jersey Colony • New Jersey was governed as a Royal Colony • The english colonists founded New Jersey in 1664. Since they were englishmen they referred to the Royal ruling • Edward Hyde was appointed by the king and became became the first governor • The governor had complete control since he was appointed by the king to rule the land

  3. Culture in New Jersey Colony • The religion was Puritan; strict in the east more laid back in the west • Any other Religion was also welcome such as Presbyterian Quaker, Baptist, Dutch reformed, 7 day Baptist, German reformed ext. • To defend themselves they all owned muskets. Some of the jobs included millers, miners and ship builders • Education wise mostly the rich were educated until 1683 when a law was passed requiring all children to get their education. In schools boys learned the art of trade and shop owning while the girls learned how to keep a home on top of reading and writing

  4. Economy of the New Jersey Colony • In New Jersey, farming was one of the most prominent occupations due to the stable climate and fertile soil which had the potential to bear many different crops • The jobs consisted of fishing, whaling, shipbuilding, being a blacksmith, a lumberjack, cobblers, carpenters, merchants, and many things • Livings for Women would be doing work like cooking, cleaning, and sewing. The food they prepared came from the crops they grew, fish they caught, and the wild game they hunted. Also women made big contributions by running farms and commercial businesses • The New Jersey citizens used the vass amount of resources and fertile land to grow and prosper to a population of 51,373 people • Not much adaptation was needed in their society due to the great conditions they had and their excelled farming • The middle colonies were big in the production of food like corn wheat, and livestock (beef and pork) • Other industries of trading was the production of iron, lumber, textiles, furs, and shipbuilding

  5. History of New Jersey Colony:Denim W • The New Jersey colony was founded in 1664 by Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkley after they were surrendered the land from the swedish and dutch without even a fight and was named after the british island, Jersey. • The colony is well known for being a royal colony and the 3rd state to ratify the constitution and first to ratify the bill of rights • The colony is very unique since it was at one point divided and half of it sold and called west jersey and reunited back in 1702 when it became a royal colony as well as the fact diversity of religion was allowed including people who were Catholic, Jews, Lutherans, and Quakers • Another reason of why the colony was unique is unlike the other colonies it was very well planned and successful and had a warmer climate that was great for farming and agriculture to where it’s referred to as the Garden state and breadbasket since they grew so much wheat • I picked a few quotes by the official New Jersey government site and what they say about the colony is: “Carteret had been governor of the Isle of Jersey. Berkeley and Carteret sold the land at low prices and allowed the settlers to have political and religious freedom.” “As a result, New Jersey was more ethnically diverse than many other colonies.”the colony grew to have about 100,000 people. “. • The piece of text that talks about the population and freedom there shows New Jersey was a very popular colony at the time since at jamestown it was nowhere to as close to 100,000 . It also shows how diverse they were compared to other colonies were very strict and demanding. Also on top of that it shows how stable the New Jersey colony was and how they had no severe problems unlike the other colonies that failed such as james town

  6. Why you should move here!:Denim W There are many reasons why you should live here and they make us unique to other colonies. • We have abundances of wheat and have a very good climate for growing to where we are called the garden state and the bread basket. • We allow all types of religion no religion is left out and we sell cheap land • The land is very popular and if you don’t believe us you can ask our 100,000 colonists who live life in ease • We respect our citizens and allow them to have more freedom compared to other controlling colonies
