Phases in Persian Art • Achaemenian period (550-330 B.C.) • Sassanian Period (A.D. 224 - 651)
Persian Carpet • Most distinguished Persian art and dates back to ancient Persia. • Can be divided into three groups: • Farsh (sized anything greater than 6×4 feet) • Qālicheh (meaning rug, sized 6×4 feet and smaller) • Gelim (including Zilu, meaning rough carpet)
Carpet Weaving • dates back to 500 B.C., during the Achaemenid period. • A Persian carpet has a wide variety designs and styles. • A unique find in 1949 was discovered by Russian archeologists in the glaciers of Pazyryk Valley, in Altai Mountains in Siberia. • Pazyryk carpet
Persian Art Post Revolution • Art is very restrictive and artists are not free to express what they really feel due to strict regulations. • Art is censored by the government.
Iran’s Greatest Filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami Abbas Kiarostam is an internationally acclaimed Iranian film director, screenwriter, photographer and film producer] An active filmmaker since 1970, Kiarostami has been involved in over forty films, including shorts and documentaries. Kiarostami attained critical acclaim for directing the Koker Trilogy, Taste of Cherry, and The Wind Will Carry Us.
Mahnaz Mohammadi • An Iranian filmmaker and women's rights activist • Director of the short documentary "Women Without Shadows • Currently detained, and imprisoned by the government.
Rakhshan Bani-E'temad • Internationally and critically acclaimed Iranian film director and screenwriter. Widely considered as Iran's premier female director, her films have been praised at international festivals as well as being remarkably popular with Iranian critics and audiences. • Films include, Off limits, blue veil, Nargess, etc.
