  7. Review

  8. Review Creation Patriarchs Exodus

  9. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness and mercy Patriarchs: Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph Exodus: • God watched over and cared for the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness, and worked through events and the giving of the law to shape them into a nation that was holy to Himself. • The “captivity” generation is eliminated, and a new generation of Israelites that has only known the one true God possesses the Promised Land.

  10. Overview • The Book of Deuteronomy (the “second law”) • Moses’ final address to the children of Israel • Recounts the history of the journey of Israel from Egypt • Repeats the Ten Commandments and all the civil, ceremonial, and moral laws • One of the most quoted books by New Testament writers • Chapter 28 focuses on Moses’ admonition to the Children of Israel to obey the LORD, listing the consequences of both obedience and disobedience.

  11. God’s desire is to bless His people through obedience, but man’s natural disposition to live in sin and rebellion, even with the knowledge of the consequences, leads him to go his own way. Key Truth

  12. Deuteronomy 28 The Exodus Era Blessings and Cursings the blessings of obedience the cursings of disobedience

  13. The Blessings of Obedience Deuteronomy 28:1-14

  14. The Blessings of Obedience www.themegallery.com • The overarching purpose of God’s blessing • God would elevate Israel so that other peoples and nations would praise the God of Israel (vs1) • The blessing of God upon His people would draw the attention and envy of other nations

  15. The Blessings of Obedience www.themegallery.com • The specific promises of God’s blessings • Restore the reproductive ability of both the land and the wombs of Israel (vs2-6) • They had been limited in the ability to proliferate and produce (either divinely or by the natural stresses of desert life) • The blessing to produce is God’s original intent for mankind (Gen 1:28) • Protect God’s people from, and instill fear in their enemies (7-10) • Open the heavens to provide for His people and use them to care for the needs of surrounding nations (11-12) • They were to serve as God’s hand of love by meeting the needs of others • Exalt the people of God above the nations around them (13-14)

  16. The Cursings of Disobedience Deuteronomy 28:15-44 Jeremiah 7

  17. The Cursings of Disobedience • Deuteronomy 28:15–A promise to respond to sin • God clearly lays out the real consequences of disobedience for those who find no joy in serving Him • Deut 28:16-18 • Prevent the successful reproduction of both land and womb • Deut 28:20-22 • Plague mind, body and land with disease • Deut 28:23-24 • Interrupt weather patterns and cause famine

  18. The Cursings of Disobedience • Deuteronomy 28:15–A promise to respond to sin • God clearly lays out the real consequences of disobedience for those who find no joy in serving Him • Deut28:25 • Bring defeat before enemies • Deut 28:30-39 • Cause loss of property, family, and oppression • Deut 28:36-37 • Lead to captivity by enemy nations • Deut 28:43-44 • Demote God’s people to servants and debtors to other nations

  19. Conclusions • God desires to show His greatness to the nations by blessing His people • One of the greatest evangelical tools God’s people possess is the testimony of the blessings that flow from living a life of faith and obedience to God • Through His Creation, God has revealed Himself as good, gracious and redemptive; yet, He moves against those who continually rebel and harden their heart • Man either walks with God by faith in His pro-mises of redemption, or rebels against God choos-ingto live by sight and the appetite of the flesh

  20. Conclusions The prophet Jeremiah captured God’s heart to bless His people and man’s heart to rebel in his day Jeremiah 7:23,25 - But this is what I commanded them, saying, ‘Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you.’ Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stub-bornnessof their evil heart, and went backward and not forward.

  21. Application What does this lesson teach about God? Man? Sin? Redemption?

  22. Discussion If Christ fulfilled the Law, why do believers still look to it? Our relationship with God is no longer determined by the practical requirements of the Mosaic Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ. But, since we still battle with the sinful flesh, the moral law helps us discern sinful actions from holy actions If blessings from God all come by grace through faith, what is the place of obedience related to blessings? What does it look like to “love God” with all your heart, soul, and strength?

  23. Bible KNOWLEDGE QUIZ The Book of Deuteronomy(1pt) • God told the Israelites to avoid going to war with the Moabites because they were the descendants of ___________? • Then the LORD said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, because I have given Ar to the sons of Lotas a possession.’(Dt 2:9) • What fish were considered ‘clean’ for eating? • “These you may eat of all that are in water: anything that has fins and scales you may eat, but anything that does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.“(Dt 14:9) • How many witnesses were required to convict someone accused of a crime? • “A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.” (Dt 19:15)

  24. BONUS ROUND Bonus Question (5pts) • How many days journey is it from Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea by way of Mt. Seir? • It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. (Dt 1:2)
