  2. Imagery • Words that create an image in the reader’s mind that allow us to see what is not directly stated in the text. It is writing that shows instead of tells! The watermelon dripped sweet, cold, sticky juice down my chin. His heart pounded like a snare drum. The figurative language types that follow are all examples of imagery.

  3. Simile: a way of describing something by comparing it with something else using "like" or "as"

  4. I am as hungry as a horse. You run like a rabbit. She is happy as a clam. He is sneaky as a snake.

  5. Metaphor: A way of describing something by comparing it to something else

  6. The girl was a fish in the water. My love is a red, red rose.

  7. Personification to give human characteristics to something nonhuman

  8. The flowers danced in the wind. The friendly gates welcomed us. The Earth coughed and choked in all of the pollution.

  9. Alliteration: Repetition of the first consonant

  15. Idioms are words or phrases that are part of popular speech that do not mean what they say. They are not literal.

  16. A picture paints a thousand words. Jeff was always putting his two cents in. Someone stole her boyfriend and now she has a chip on her shoulder. My new skinny jeans cost an arm and a leg.
