The Persian Wars. In 492 B.C. Darius of Persia demanded Greece become part of the Persian Empire. Spartans and Athenians killed Darius’ messengers. Enraged, Darius plans an invasion of Greece. The Persians plan for a major battle at Marathon. The Athenians ask for the help of Spartans.

In 492 B.C. Darius of Persia demanded Greece become part of the Persian Empire.
The Athenians ask for the help of Spartans. • The Spartans needed a week to prepare for battle. • Some Athenian generals were not prepared to wait. • The Athenians generals decided to go into the battle alone without help.
The Greeks sent their fastest runner 26.2 miles to Athens to tell of the victory at Marathon.
