  3. Valley Forge PA, Winter 1777-1778 British are warm and cozy in Philadelphia Americans suffer: 1. limited food 2. lack blankets, shoes, shirts 3. Poor shelter Many desert- leave w/o permission

  4. Help from Oversees Marquis de Lafayette -French Noblemen -becomes trusted aid to Washington

  5. Help from Oversees Friedrich von Steuben Former Germany army officer Helps train soldiers

  6. War in the West Native Americans: British seem to pose less of a threat George Rodgers Clarkset out to end British attacks on Western settlements Vincennes- Americans win and strengthen their position in West

  7. War at Sea British create a blockadeof the colonies. Blockade - cut off or close area (harbors) to stop supplies from reaching the army Privateers – Merchant War Ships British Navy is the strongest in the world.

  8. War at Sea John Paul Jones: naval officer who attacked British ports and ships Jones is able to defeat Serapis, but his ship sinks shortly after

  9. The South 1778- British Strategy: Hard Hitting offensive in South, gain decisive victories Charleston: Clinton defeats Americans and takes thousands of prisoners

  12. Victory at Yorktown • French warships appear off New Port, RI • Washington camped near NYC, watching Clinton and waiting for ship • Washington sends Nathanael Greene to fight in the South

  13. Change in Plans • Cornwallis camped in Yorktown • 1781- Admiral Francois de Grasse heading towards Chesapeake Bay instead of NY • Washington & French secretly march troops 200 miles in 15 days • Washington, Lafayette, and de Grasses meet near Yorktown • Surround Yorktown

  14. Cornwallis’ Defeat • Washington’s plan works perfectly • 14,000 American & French troops vs. 7,500 Brits and Hessians • Cornwallis is cornered, Clinton helpless • October 9th: Americans and French begin bombardment • Brits supplies run low, high number of casualties = surrender

  15. The War is Won! • Yorktown convinces Brits that war is too costly • B. Franklin, John Jay, John Adams- Delegates in Paris • Treaty of Paris (1783)-recognizes American Independence • Brits promise to withdraw all troops
