Cost of demand side management is a fraction as compared to SSM Nega watt is cheaper & cleaner than Mega watt ( Rs 1 Crore vs 4 Crore) Saving on consumables cost DSM reduces CO2 emissions Most developed and emerging nations heavily into DSM Good DSM will ensure that India emerges as an environmentally responsible super power

Demand Side Management • World energy demand will grow 2.2 percent annually to 2020 – significantly faster than the the 1.7 percent growth rate observed since 1986. • There is potential to cut global energy demand by 135 QBTUs per annum in year 2020. • Contrary to general belief, the effort will not be expensive. The investments to boost energy productivity use existing technologies with an IRR of 10% or more. • 1 QBTU = 25 MMTOE • McKinsey Global Institute,May 2007

THRUST AREAS INDUSTRIAL SECTOR • Train technicians, managers, decision makers and equip them to pursue energy conservation programs • Provide required investments, advisory services for rapid adoption of latest technologies and modern equipments • Disseminate information on International fund mechanism for technology upgradation and transfer • Encourage inter-fuel substitution • Bio gasifiers

THRUST AREAS INDUSTRIAL SECTOR • Intensify efforts to provide competent energy auditors • Promote use of fuel efficient equipmentsby giving incentives to efficient users of energy and tax the inefficient users • Prescribe standards of oil / energy use in various industries - benchmarking • Make mandatory energy labelling of equipments, appliances, technologies and processes • Energy Efficient Equipment in all purchases • Lifetime cost in place of one time cost.

THRUST AREAS INDUSTRIAL SECTOR • Stress on co-generation and tri-generation where simultaneous demand for power, cooling and heating exists • Phase out manufacture of energy inefficient equipment and prohibit its manufacture and sale • Promote R&D efforts for developing energy efficient technologies • Bulk Purchase as incentive • Prize • Encourage the use of multifunctional fuel oil additives for improved energy efficiency • Set up demonstration project to disseminate information on energy saving technologies • Subsidize Energy Efficiency & not Energy • Australia has already banned usage of incandescent bulbs

Domestic Sector Energy Conservation Tools Education on :- • Good cooking habits • Use of Fuel Efficient BIS marked Kerosene / LPG stoves and lighting appliances. • Use of alternate sources of energy i.e. Biogas, Solar etc. • Use CFLs • LPG Clinics including workshops • School childrens as ambassadors • Lessons in school Books on conservation • Green Building – domestic & commercial • Energy Efficient Chulhas ( 200 MMT of bio mass being used)

THRUST AREAS DOMESTIC SECTOR • Review subsidy for LPG and Kerosene • RaiseBIS specification for thermal efficiency of the LPG stove beyond 68% - Also enabling activities • Intensify R&D efforts for developing fuel efficient kerosene lamps / stoves • Promote efficient use of biogas, biomass, briquets and solar energy on a large scale • Mandatory labeling of appliances and equipment • Stand by consumption to be reduced • Use of LEDs in lights – but costly at present

  28. AGRICULTURE SECTOR • Research shows that upto - 25% diesel consumed in tractors can be saved by proper care and maintenance - 30% of diesel can be saved by using ISI marked equipments and proper arrangement and usage of pipes and bends in LIP sets(Lift Irrigation Pumpsets)
