  2. Civilization Develops Along Nile River • Many years ago hunter-gatherer groups settled along the Nile River, because they found plants, wild animals, and fish to eat. • As time passed they learned to farm and decided to settle there.

  3. Why settle around the Nile? • The Egyptians were able to use the water from the Nile River to water their crops. • The Nile River allowed the people to have a lot of food. • They grew wheat, barley, fruit, vegetables and raised cattle and sheep. • The river also provided a lot of fish.

  4. Why settle around the Nile? • The Nile River provided natural barriers that made it very hard to invade Egypt. • The deserts to the west were too big and harsh to cross. • The Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea kept enemies away. • The Nile River also had a lot of cataracts. • Cataracts big stones that stick out of the water, and often create dangerous waterfalls.
