  1. Non verbal communication. How necessary is it to use and interpret it? ENG 270 ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION STUDIES Instructor: Stavroulla Hadjiconstantinou Elissavet Irakleous

Non- verbal Communication is: • The most basic form of Communication, can be communicated through gesture and touch by body languages, eye contact e.g. Speech was not always used. • NVC is difficult to study and we can’t know how people learn it. (not structured). • Occurs without prepare at any time. • Many people send and receive non verbal signals all the time and this indicate what they are truly feeling.

  3. The importance of NVC: • Non-verbal signals have an important role in the structuring and control of human interactive processes. They inform the participants of a conversation as to how their messages are received and so allow for correction and interaction. • NVC also plays a central role in the image of a person because it transmits an impression of the person’s personality (for example, clothing, choice of words). NVC makes it easier to lie without being revealed. • Non-verbal messages give more information as the to relationship between participants of a conversation. Using NVC elements, for example gestures can definitely help to maintain the attention of the listener.

NVC is thought to comprise six functions in human communication • To express emotion for example happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise express feelings and attitudes. • To facilitate specific tasks with NVC is more easier to describe experiences which help to understand what must do. • To regulate the flow of conversation when someone don’t know what to say, with some expressions can continue the conversation. • To control or influence others NVC help people to order and to impose what they want.

  5. Continue……… • To quality, complement, contradict or expand verbal messages help to flow and complete messages easy. • To provide info either consciously or unconsciously the information easily swapping between people, sometimes without programming.

Nonverbal Communication’s Effect on Interpersonal Communication It is better to choose several common and representative nonverbal behaviors to expound how nonverbal communication affects interpersonal communication. Facial Expressions are perhaps the most important non verbal way in which emotion outweigh. In each countries the meaning of expressions are differ. For example, in American culture the smile is typically an expression of pleasure

  7. Continue…. • Gesture We use gestures such as head and hand movements to proof feelings. We can use them to add emphasis, for example scratching your head or face indicates impatience or disinterest. • General Appearance and Dress a rich man may wear a diamond ring or smoking cigar to reveal that he is wealthy and superior. people dress up themselves according to their age, class, occupation.

  8. Conclusion: • The ability to interpret nonverbal communication is acquired at a very young agebecause children must understand the first side of the world. • NVC can help a small business owner to get a message across, or to successfully interpret a message received from another person.
