  3. Mrs. Kelly Holland I have been teaching for 7 years. During those years, I have taught kindergarten to third grade. I have my bachelors degree in childhood education and my master’s degree in early childhood special education. I am currently working toward my applied behavior analysis certification at Hunter College. I grew up in a military family so moving every two years was a huge part of my life. I have been in Manhattan for 7 years, the longest I have been anywhere! I live here with my husband and my 9 month old son, Declan.

  4. Mrs. Andrea Lopez I have been teaching for 10 years. My experience ranges from pre-school to second grade. I have a bachelors degree in elementary education, a masters degree in early childhood and 30 credits above my masters degree in special education. All from Hunter College. I have also been an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College in the literacy department. I grew up in Manhattan but now live in the Bronx with my husband and two daughters. Isabella is 3 years old and Arianna is 17 months.

  5. Ms. Karen Engel • Ms. Engel is class 2-309’s third teacher. She is responsible for teaching the science curriculum to our students. • Ms. Engel is also with our class during lunch time and all of their specials, such as: music and growing healthy. • Any questions or concerns about science, lunch or any of the specialty subjects should be addressed with Ms. Engel as we are not with the class during these times.

Mathematics : Everyday Math • …un-spiraled to support Common Core Standards Explanations of terms used: Major: areas of intensive focus, where students need fluent understanding and application of the core concepts (approximately 70%). Supporting: rethinking and linking; areas where some material is being covered, but in a way that applies core understandings (approximately 20%). Additional: expose students to other subjects, though at a distinct, level of depth and intensity(approximately 10%).

  13. Inquiry Based Instruction Inquiry based instruction is a student-centered and teacher-guided instructional approach that engages students in investigating real world questions that THEY choose within a broad thematic framework.

Social Studies • Community Study… New York City: Past, Present, Future • New York Past (September-January): From the settlement of New Amsterdam to the mid 1800’s. • New York Present (February-April): Mid 1800’s to the present day. • New York Future (May-June): Thinking about the next 20-30 years.

  16. BUILDING INDEPENDENCE!!!!!!! We can not stress enough how important it is to teach our second graders to become independent and responsible students and learners this year. Third grade is not far away where standardized testing begins!
