Concept Development • Plot: the basic structure of any story • It ALWAYS includes these ELEMENTS • Exposition: The basic situation of a story (includes setting and characters) • Conflict: strugglebx 2 forces (what is trying to be solved) • External: • Internal: man v. self • Complications: problems that arise during the plot as part of the major conflict • Climax: usually near the end, when the outcome of the conflict is determined • Resolution: (also called denouement-dā’noomä)End of story when conflict is resolved

  5. Concept Development • Checking for understanding • What is PLOT? • What is included in the EXPOSITION? • What is another name for RESOLUTION?

  6. Importance • Why is PLOT important? • Every story—books, movies, even songs and poem have a PLOT • If you understand PLOT and its elements, you can better understand books, movies, ANY story • You can also make predictions about what is going to happen in a story

  8. Closure • What is introduced in the EXPOSITION? • What are the 2 major types of CONFLICT? • When and What is the CLIMAX of a story? • Why is PLOT important?

  9. Independent Practice • Time to APPLY • Independently or with a partner, create a PLOT diagram for a movie or book you have seen or read recently • Exposition: Include setting and characters • Rising Action: Include the major conflict and 2 complications
