Time (When?): During summer vacation Place (Where?): On a river in the U.S.(Bridal Creek and Gottland Rapids Atmosphere (What?): Tense, stressful white water rafting trip Conditions (Why?): Family vacation gone wrong when the family is ‘‘taken hostage’’ on the river by Wade and Terry. Occupations (Who?): Gail, a history teacher at a school for the deaf, used to be a guide on the river. The other main characters are Roark, Tom(architect), Wade, and Terry. Setting

  3. The main conflict is person vs. person. Gail and her family must escape from Wade and Terry who have placed them all in danger. A secondary conflict, person vs. nature, is caused by Wade who forces Gail to naviguate the raft through the Gottland rapids. Conflict

  4. A) Gail and her family are on a white water rafting trip. Tom joins them despite the work that he must finish. B) Wade and Terry are “abandoned” by their guide and need Gail’s help to make it safely down the river. C) -Wade tries to drown Tom when he is rescued from the water. - Tom shares his suspicions about Wade and Terry with Gail. -Wade shows Roark the gun. • - Family tries to signal distress to the Ranger(Johnny) -Tom pretends to have been shot -Wade shoots Ranger Johnny D) They survive the most dangerous rapids on the river; Gail shoots Wade E) They are rescued by Rangers F) The family is finally reunited, and they can make it safely home to Boston.   5. Never give up. Gail and Tom did everything they could to save their family. • Always stick together. It is by working together that Gail and Tom succeeded in saving their family. Theme

  7. Wade shows Roark his gun. Hints that Wade has bad intentions and will use it later on against someone, which he does(against Tom, Ranger, etc.) • Wade gives Roark 200 $ for his birthday. Hints that Wade and Terry have a lot of money…probably stolen, which we find out later is the case(stolen from a cattle auction). Foreshadowing
