plot • For three years, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) has been the assistant to Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), who is a hard-driving executive editor in chief at a New York publishing company. When Margaret, a Canadian, faces deportation for an expired visa, she devises a scheme to marry Andrew and he agrees if she'll promise a promotion. • A disbelieving INS agent plans to test the couple about their knowledge on the following Monday, and Margaret plans to spend the entire weekend getting to know one another. However, Andrew had alternate plans to fly home that weekend for his grandma's 90th, so Margaret goes with him to Sitka, Alaska – Andrew’s home town. • His mom, dad, and family await the “happy couple” but family dynamics take over: tensions between Andrew and his father, an ex-girlfriend, Andrew's dislike of Margaret, and her past make the next few days a nightmare, with the INS ready to charge Andrew with fraud until they realize they are truly in love and decide to get engaged, for real this time.
